BALLET #01

2016

3D-print nylon, projection installation

When light is projected onto the rotating circular wire mesh sculpture, a figure of a ballet dancer is brought to life. The motif of this work is the careful and deliberate human movement that is ballet. Inspiration was taken from Eadweard Muybrige's 1878 study of movement through motion sequence photography. A particular focus of this work is how things become visible when the light hits them right. Without the light nothing will appear. If several lights are shone, it seems as if the number of dancers increases to match the number of lights. In reality, only one dancer appears. That one person's past, present, and future is depicted. It is then repeated over and over.
